Recently I have been painting with oil pastels, in addition to my usual soft pastels, oils, and acrylics.  For those of us who like to "draw" our paintings, oil pastels can work very well.  I scribble on value shapes very quickly, then brush in Gamsol (a good odorless solvent), which results in a nice underpainting.  I can work over the underpainting while it is still wet or wait a little for it to dry.  Try it!

I have demonstrated oil pastel painting at meetings of the North Clackamas Arts Guild, the Society of Washington Artists, and the Portland Fine Arts Guild.  I taught an oil pastel workshop at the Milwaukie Center, where I will lead a one-day soft pastel workshop on February 20.

I will be showing over thirty paintings at the penthouse of the Ardea in January -- a joint showing with Michael Fisher, friend and fellow architect/artist.

Travel has always inspired me.  A visit to Northern Italy led to a series of paintings -- mostly of Venice, my favorite city.  In November and December of 2008 we were in Peru and Ecuador.  The first Peru painting is a large (32x40) view of Machu Picchu.  What an amazing place, especially for an architect/artist!  The images below are from the first of the Italian series, "Riomaggiore."   They show stages of the painting as I progressed from start to finish.  (Click on any for a larger view.)
