About the Artist

Gary Michael is a native of the Portland area and has been drawing since a very early age.  He studied art and architecture at the University of Oregon and Yale University, where he received a Master of Architecture degree.  As a principal in his own architectural firm from 1965 to 1998, he won numerous competitions and design awards.

Michael began to paint again in the early 80s.  He has worked in watercolors, colored pencil and acrylics, but since 1990 has concentrated on pastels and oils.  He finds pastels particularly responsive.  "Pastels are a wonderful combination of drawing and painting, they are easily portable for plein air work, and a range of rich colors are available."

Favorite subjects are landscapes and historic architectural scenes.  He is attracted to landscapes with a strong or unique sense of place, and attempts to convey to a viewer the beauty of natural and rural areas in the Northwest and around the world.

Michael continues to study and experiment with new materials and ideas.

He has studied with artists such as Albert Handell, Doug Dawson, Bob Rohm, Richard McDaniel, Susan Ogilvie, Gil Dellinger and Richard McKinley.  His paintings have won numerous awards.  He is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and of the Northwest Pastel Society, and a Professional Member of the Oil Pastel Society.

When he is not painting he most likely is playing his trumpet in one of several ensembles or traveling with his wife, State Representative Carolyn Tomei.  Their trips to Britain, Europe, China, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Latin America have provided experiences and images for many paintings.

Gary Michael's home and studio overlooks a beautiful stretch of the Willamette River and Elk Rock Island.  He is constantly inspired by his environment.

Michael enjoys sharing his ideas and experiences through painting demonstrations, teaching workshops, and leading and participating in critiques.  He is available for commissioned work.
